Provenance unknown although several persons of that name resided in southern Massachusetts in the early 19th century. Text quite legible; no page tears or creases. Charles Backus was born in Norwich (Franklin) in 1749, a descendant of William Backus of Old Saybrook. After graduating from Yale in 1769 he studied theology under Dr. Hart of Preston and in 1774 became Pastor of the the Congregational Church in Somers, Connecticut where he remained until his death in 1803. While there, Backus established an informal divinity school, trained nearly 50 ministers and theologians, and published numerous sermons as well as a history of the town of Somers.
