According to the biography, McWatters appears to have been quite a character, having dabbled in law, and later a career in law enforcement at the Metropolitan Police Force in New York, and later in detective work, as well as affiliations with actors and theatre life. McWatters is also the author of Detectives of Europe and America : or, Life in the Secret Service; The Gambler's Wax Finger and Other Startling Detective Experiences; Forgers and Confidence Men, or, The Secrets of the Detective Service Divulged. The book has a solid binding, but is just starting at top of front endpapers. Cover rather faded and worn at corners; fraying at spine ends. Gilt of spine quite faded. Endpapers & preliminaries are lightly soiled & foxed; interior pages overall clean with no presence of foxing.
