Very Good in Good+ dust jacket; Hardcover; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 184 pages, bound in red cloth with orange top-stain. Three maps in text: 1) Competitive Routes, Chicago-Missouri Valley; 2) Local Competition 1875-79; 3) Gould Roads, 1879-1881, and Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy. Clean bright cover; light wear base of spine. Endpapers darkened; previous owner's name at front endpaper and stamped on top edge of text block. Internals crisp and unmarked. Jacket has a couple shallow tears and longer tear at edge of spine., mended on underside. Using the records of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy lines, the Chicago and Northwestern line, and the private papers of James F. Foy, author Grodinsky illuminates the development of the Iowa Pool in the 1870's and its unprecedented banding together of three companies that controlled the Chicago-Omaha road: the Northwestern, the Burlington, and the Rock Island.
