Light rubbing on edges of spine. Paper cover has minor wrinkling at head of spine (possibly from binding procss) ; NOT reading creases. Pages crisp, clean, unmarked. Albert Kahn, a childhood immigrant to Detroit Michigan, first learned the science and craft of architecture in the firm of Mason & Rice, and later an intensive study trip to Europe. He oepened his own firm in 1895 with three younger brothers; their first industrial commission was in 1900 for a pneumatic hammer manufacturing factory in Detroit. Another brother, Julius, a civil engineer, then joined the firm and developed a new concrete reinforcing system called the Kahn Bar System. Albert Kahn incorporated it into his current construction project, the Engineering Building on the University of Michigan campus, and then in the Palms Apartments in Detroit and in the War College Building in Washington, D.C. In 1905 he designed Plant Building #10 for the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit using reinforced concrete and the Kahn Bar System. This innovative success opened the door for the Kahn brothers' collaboration with the George Pierce Company, maker of the Pierce Arrow automobile, on a factory building in Buffalo, New York . Henry Ford soon caught notice and the Kahn brothers began a long collaboration, designing the Highland Park Plant, River Rouge Plant, and the Glass Plant for the Ford Motor Company. International acclaim followed, resulting in work on five continents. Kahn's Michigan designs include the Cranbrook House, Bloomfield Hills (1909); Belle Isle Aquarium, Detroit (1904); the General Motors Building (1922) and the Fischer Building (1928), Detroit; Angell Hall (1925), Hill Auditorium (1913), and the William Clements Library (1923) on the University of Michigan campus (Ann Arbor); and the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, Grosse Pointe Shores (1926). 29909
