Harper & Brothers 1860, Very Good; Hardcover; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; Ex-Library; 10 volumes, bound in full calf, dark brown leather title labels on spine; gilt rules on spine. All edges marbled. All volumes Good to Very Good. Ex-library markings include bookplate on front endpaper; card pocket at rear, and two labels on each spine. Covers are clean, edges lightly worn; black ink or wax has been coated on the fore-edges, although quite worn away. Some volumes with shallow chipping at ends of spine and three volumes with splits or cracks in the leather joints. All volumes remain solidly or adequately bound nonetheless. Boards a bit flared. Internals show some foxing on endpapers & preliminaries; text pages are overall clean and bright with only occasional scattered foxing. Signs of minor insect damage at corner of one volume. Books are hand-numbered 410- 419. Volumes include the following biographies: V. 1 - John Stak, Charles Brockden Brown, Richard Montgomery, and Ethan Allen; V. 2 - Alexander Wilson and Captain John Smith; V. 3 - Benedict Arnold; V. 4 - Anthony Wayne and Sir Henry Vane; V. 5 - John Eliot the Apostle to the Indians; V 6 - William Pinkney, William Ellery, and Cotton Mather; V. 7 - Sir William Phips, Israel Putnam, Lucretia Maria Davidson, and David Rittenhouse; V. 8 - Jonathan Edwards and David Brainerd; V. 9 - Baron Steuben, Sebastian Cabot and William Eaton; V. 10 - Robert Fulton, Joseph Warren, Henry Hudson, and Father Marquette. This first series, was published between 1834-1838 contains biographies of 26 lives; the second series, published from 1844-1847 contains biographies of 34 personages. Jared Sparks authored 8 of the biographies himself. In this first series, he wrote the biographies of Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and Marquette. Sparks was born in Willington Connecticut, educated at Harvard, became an ordained minister of the Unitarian Church, and later a chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives. He is most famously known as a pioneer in original research and documentation of American history. 26155
